The first thing that was apparent to him was the noise, or lack thereof. Besides the quiet beeping of a machine beside him, the room was completely silent. He sat there for a moment, eyes closed and body relaxed, trying to remember what happened and trying to figure out where he was. Tentatively, he opened one eyelid and then the other. It took his eyes a moment to adjust and he blinked several times, looking around. He appeared to be in a white-grey room devoid of furnishing besides a couple of machines beside him and a small desk in the far corner.
It all seemed very… strange. As if something minute was out of place. He couldn’t place it, but it seemed…
His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a door opening. A tall male doctor with a graying goatee walked towards the desk and grabbed a clipboard. His nametag read “Dr. Kurze”. With a smile he began, “Greetings. I know this must all be very strange for you. Can you recall what happened prior to your death?”
Erik’s mind is completely blank as he stares back at Dr. Kurze. Dead? Him? What happened to Jay? His mind begins to race.
“I… uh…” he begins, his voice faltering. “I was… I was at a bar. With a couple friends. We were-.” He is cut short by the doctor’s stunned expression. He begins to scribble furiously on his clipboard. Dr. Kurze quickly stands up and walks out the door, handing a piece of paper to someone standing just outside and talking in a low voice.
After a moment, he closes the door and walks over to a machine. He moves the screen so that Erik can see. On it, there appears to be a picture of a human body. Dr. Kurze points to a white spots on the shoulders. “You have implants, yes?” he says. Nodding, Erik looks back at him puzzled.
Dr. Kurze takes a deep breath and stands up. “You’re in luck, Mr. Kolvek. Someone has been asking for you here. One… Jaroslav Armenov, if I recall…”
Erik can’t help but grin despite the situation. Hey, he may be screwed but at least he has a friend. Dr. Kurze was continuing, saying, “...after the paperwork is signed, of course. He has been notified and should be down here shortly.”
He begins to leave before turning and saying, “I should warn you. You have a bit of a… situation, on your hands. Mr. Armenov will explain fully when he gets back. Welcome to the Syndicate States of New Ephebe.” With that, he walks out the door, leaving Erik in stunned silence once more.
