I just have to take a second to suggest that anyone who has not yet played the Homeworld Remastered Collection (on steam) should DEFINITELY check it out. It's just so damn Beautiful I want to cry.

Check out youtube videos to see graphics quality... A couple of new features are added and some bugs fixed as well. It is worth the money.
PS: One of my classes is a 3d manufacturing and design class, and we get time on the college's 3d printer. I plan to do a run of scale models of the Homeworld ships. If you want copies, let me know.

Loved the original game. If the remastered came out for Mac, I would buy it.

I have about 40 hours playtime now. Frankly the Remastered games look great, but play like shit. HW1/2-RE:
- Formations do not work.
- Ship models are the same from HW1, but HW1-RE uses the HW2 engine. So it creates pathing/shooting/engagement issues.
- The "updated" UI looks and functions like something a High School kid would have made in a game dev class.
- The graphics look great. Game will crash frequently on higher resolution.
- Removed mechanics from HW1 under the claim "they were not compatible with the HW2 engine" which is a lie, since mods accomplish what was removed.
- My game freezes for about 1.5 seconds anytime a ship is produced from my mothership. The "hang-up" occurs when the voice file is played, not before or after.
- Sound will occasinally start to skip, hang, sound garbled, or like its underwater. Must reload game to fix.
Honestly? The remastered editions are pretty awful and embarrassing. Especially coming from the company that put out Borderlands.
However. The ORIGINAL games included are definitely worth it.
HW1 runs very stable, and i rarely have issues with crashing. Its recommended you run it in Compat for Win7. HW2 runs kind of stable. I crash to desktop sans error about every 30 minutes. Certain mods will reduce crashes to near 0.
It's up to you. I'm more than willing to talk about it and answer any questions.
HW2(original) + Fleet Simulator, OR Complex 9 makes the purchase totally worth it. I still run into crashes running the Fleet Sim mod, but with Complex 9, its very stable.
Complex 10, is in the works as well as a patch for Complex 9.
Gearbox is already talking about patches and fixes.

And people ask me why I'm zealously cynical about the games industry.

I only have about 8 hours myself so far, but I encountered none of those problems. They did only use the HW2 formations system for both, but it IS functional. I have been running on full settings with no problems. The multiplayer can be a bit buggy, it is beta. The first game I played online I got my buns waxed most embarrassingly.
There was a small glitch when in HW1 capturing ships too large to fit in the mothership, they kind of ram into the door for a minute, then glitch inside, but everything else was smooth sailing.
One of my favorite moments in any RTS has to be the mission "bridge of sighs" where there are literally three hundred enemy ion cannon frigates, all in a sphere formation and you have to get past them... I spent nearly three hours using a squadron of scouts to kite these frigates around and capture them... I left that mission with 75 extra frigates in my fleet.
I didn't mind the UI/couldn't tell much difference. it was all just as functional.

Formations: They will form up, and fly in formation, once engaged in combat they will break formation and engage whatever enemy they choose. It renders formations like "Claw" useless. Using the "sphere" formation rarely stays together either.
UI: Check out the original HW2, then remastered. The information density is greatly reduced in Remastered. Hangers have a long single unit line that is not sorted at all. UI size is reduced to 4(iirc) settings. Most windows occupy effectively 1/3rd of the screen, if you choose a smaller size you may not be able to read things.
I'm happy with my purchase. Like i said, HW2+Complex 9.1 is worth it. But the remastered games feel like a poorly implemented rush job.
I've even redownloaded twice, and i still get the sound issues and occasion freezes. All drivers updates and everything. Civ 5 runs smoother.

I wish there was an option in SM to control a fleet of ships like in HW. I swear I would never leave the house again!

if anyone ever wants to play, let me know.
I'd love to try some multiplayer VS CPU with complex 9.1... but those games can easily last 3+hours.
