I was just looking at STEAM gameplay stats for last year. This one game dominated the rankings pretty handily. Its called "Unturned". Its free and in early access, which explains why its so popular. (Cant beat free right?)
Honestly the game looks rough. Its basically DayZ but in a voxel world. It has guns, cars, thirst, hunger, ect.
It looks like it could be fun, and would be really fun with other people.
The mediocre or downright poor graphics are 100% cool with me. (My laptop is nothing special).
Anyone else want to give it a shot? You can be my first friend on STEAM!

I always did want to play DayZ, but between me not being able to play neither the Arma 2 or the standalone due to sucky computer specs I could never play it. now I gotta contend with a crappy internet, of which I can't even play world of tanks on. which is apparently quite light on the internet.

I've played it before. It's quite fun and they recently gave it a massive overhaul with a Canada-based map. Here is my feedback:
For a free game, Unturned is pretty good. The new dev test map ("Canada") is absolutely massive, with multiple cities and zones. There are various gun types; sniper rifles, assault rifles, carbines, pistols, magnums, shotguns - and each can be customised with a number of items, namely the Tactical attachment, the Barrel attachment and the Scope attachment.
I haven't played the multiplayer but from what I've seen people like to build camping bases in zones with lots of loot, so finding a less populated server would be best. Try getting the hang of the game in Singleplayer, too.
Unturned has hunger and thirst mechanisms. Both are somewhat simple; they decrease over time and are replenished when you eat or drink (Some items, like canned soups or MREs replenish both bars; others, like chips or water, replenish only their respective bars). When the bar drops to 0, you begin to lose health gradually till you die (though if something is eaten or drunk in time the health loss will stop).
It also has sickness mechanisms. Sickness increases if you eat raw or moldy food, or are attacked by a zombie. If it reaches 100%, same deal as 0% food or water. Sickness is lessened by medicines.
There is an energy bar. Energy is a "store" of time which you can sprint or jump in. If you sprint or jump too much constantly, it runs to 0% and you will have to wait a few seconds before it begins regenerating.
Unturned's damage system is generic. Headshots do extra damage, body shots do less. Targetting individual limbs does not affect anything. In Easy mode, there is no fall damage or bleeding. In Normal or above, however, there is. The headshot and bodyshot system also applies to melee weapons (Hitting the head with a knife does more damage than hitting the body).
In Normal + modes, there is bleeding, fall damage and broken legs. Bleeding is a status effect cancelled by bandages, doing damage over time. It is applied by cutting weapons and occasionally car crashes (When a car runs over you). Fall damage applies when you fall from a height and often comes along with broken legs. Broken legs comes from falling from too high a height and disables sprinting and jumping till you cure it with a splint.
Unturned has a crafting system that allows you to craft provisions from lesser materials. The reloading system is incorporated into this as well. More on it later.

Unturned is amusing to say the least, but I can't port forward and thus wouldn't be able to host a server.
