As other games were mentioned here, does someone know Gratuitous Space battles? GSB is the ultimate space strategy game from UK indie developer Positech Games. It's a strategy / management / simulation game that does away with all the base building and delays and gets straight to the meat and potatoes of science-fiction games : The big space battles fought by huge spaceships with tons of laser beams and things going 'zap!', 'ka-boom!' and 'ka-pow!'. In GSB you put your ships together from modular components, arrange them into fleets, give your ships orders of engagement and then hope they emerge victorious from battle (or at least blow to bits in aesthetically pleasing ways).

Haven't played it for long, yet. I've only passed the first three missions on all difficulties.

Ohh, the really annoying and fun thing will be the campaign...as you will meet random fleets by other players in it, so while you might meet a rather easily crumbling fleet at one point...you might clash against a highly sophisticated warmachine on other occasions~

Worst case scenario you meet a fleet of the starship Enterprise... or miniature deathstars.. or Borg.. or the covenant, or all of the above, at the same time...

Regarding star wars....
The rebels are a collection of species that once formed part of the galactic empire, but broke away due to the harsh demands of the empire for ever greater sacrifices in terms of military commitment. The rebels reasoned that the only way to ever be free of a lifetime of military services for the glory of the empire was to dedicate their lives to fighting against them. As a result, today's modern rebel alliance contains the majority of the irony-resistant species in the galaxy.

GSB is a fun little game. It's available on Mac too. Are there many people still playing it?

I don't know, its hard to judge that by the challenges as you don't "really" play against anyone....but it certainly made me enjoy point defenses more~ Or that smaller and cheaper warships don't really have much survivability

What is your favorite fleet make up? I only did the demo, and the only way I could win on 3 levels was with a frigate rush. The second mission was the toughest.

It comes down to your preferred Style and the enemies make up: I usually go with a three layered Cruiser formation: front Cruisers armed with lasers and 1 EMP cannon, as well as Anti-EMP before getting as much shields and armor (auto repair) as possible, after them Mid-range Cruisers with Beam and Fusion Lasers and in the back Missile Cruisers who use: well missiles and multi warhead missiles. As those formation would be rather poorly without some frigates I usually add 2-4 Anti fighter frigatess which fly in formation with the mid range cruisers and 2 Point Defense frigates for every front Cruiser and if needed even 1 for the Mid range cruiser (flying in formation obviously). Usually that should be able to rather flexible, but there are challenges at which even armored laser fighter only win (usually I only use fighter if needed, as I find them a bit poor to pre-order, mostly setting them up with the front cruiser as I hope if does die and the fighters are set free, enemy shields and armors might be down enough to let them tear those capital ships apart.)

I've been having the most success with the Rebel frigate rush. The smallest fastest frigates supported by a few groups of fighters. Most cruisers simply can't hit them very often because they are small and fast. And I usually have at least 3-4 frigates per enemy cruiser. The only thing that stops them if there is a lot of fighters or if there is a speed reducing anomaly. Then I had to use a simplified formation of cruisers similar to the one you described. However, I'm not very far into it, so we'll see.
