So I had an idea this morning, since I've been studying past space missions, and I think we should create a Space Race type gamemode on Starmade, that we could compete in, maybe even once.
Basically, two teams (or even two teams of 1) start on separate planets in a system. The objective is to build up resources and plan out a space mission to a neighbouring planet (cause there is no moons). The way it would work is the shuttles consist of stages, like boosters. Each booster would have power and thrusters and when they are 'detached' they would act as a proper space mission's setup, so to reach escape velocity, the ships would have only enough power to run the thrusters to get the hunk of metal intospace, then they would detach main thrusters and use small thrusters to boost themselves.
The way thrusters/power would be limited to 'fuel' would be a set amount of power, to a rough amount of mass, that would make the ship only run the thrusters for a short time, hence the boosters to escape the gravity of the planet. We can test what works with certain masses, but the idea is that 'fuel' (amount of thrust and power) would limit the resources used and you would need to plan it all out.
I'm not too sure on details but we could have set obstacles like certain speeds when landing, certain masses for shuttles and certain gear (fake oxygen tanks (more mass), crew quarters, etc.). I think it'd be a great little game to do in starmade, and even other things like 'long range' missions, where we would grant additional speed via thrusters or power when passing a star, acting as a gravity 'slingshot'. One more thing, just to clarify: 'detaching' stages is just removing the parts in build mode .
Tell me what you think , I'd love to do something like this for fun.
